Letter of Introduction

Dear Viking Community,

I am honored and excited to be appointed the next principal of Harbor View Elementary School. Harbor View is an exceptional school with an outstanding history of successful student achievement, excellent instruction, and student involvement in a variety of academic and enrichment activities. All of these accomplishments would not be possible without the amazing staff and families who pour their heart and soul into the lives of the young Vikings at Harbor View.

It is with tremendous enthusiasm that I bring my 20 years of experience in NMUSD to join the Viking community to serve the students who make Harbor View Elementary such a special place to learn. Prior to my assignment at Harbor View, I have been an elementary teacher, Teacher on Special Assignment, Elementary Principal, and Coordinator of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction in NMUSD. While I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with colleagues supporting district-wide initiatives throughout the K-12 continuum, I am thrilled about the opportunity to return to a school site where I will be able to build relationships with every student, staff member, and family at Harbor View.

I greatly enjoy working with elementary school students. I have spent extensive time studying the standards, curriculum, and instructional strategies for students in preschool through 6th grade. Additionally, I am extremely proud of the opportunities I have had to serve students in the special education program at multiple schools throughout our district. Working alongside the teachers and support staff to serve students with special needs illustrated the ways diversity in our schools enhances and enriches our ability to meaningfully connect with people in our lives.

The importance of education runs deep in my family. My mother was a teacher, my wife is a teacher, and my son and daughter are currently in elementary and middle school, respectively. As a parent myself, I understand every person wants the absolute best for their child- academically, socially, and emotionally. Partnering with all of you, and the members of the Harbor View staff, I will work tirelessly to ensure every child at Harbor View continues to receive the best education possible.

I know these are quite unusual times, and we have all found ourselves in a position to participate in the education of students in ways we never imagined. I assure you, I am committed to connecting with each and every child and at Harbor View next year. I will be working closely with our district office, and other elementary school principals, over summer to develop plans for a safe and challenging learning experience for every student.

It is an honor and a privilege to become a member of the team at Harbor View and work alongside the devoted staff in service of our students. I am confident the ongoing school-community partnership will continue to build on the wonderful program already in place at Harbor View and will find new ways to bring each child’s voice into focus as the center of learning in each classroom.

I hope you all find ways to rest and recharge over summer. I look forward to meeting you in August.

Sincerely,

Gabriel Del Real
